Cemetery Birds

Megan Denese Mealor

her conclusive marker
††††††††††† is a catís eye teardrop
armored with†††††††† a revering Texas pearl Madonna
fenestral fiberglass Ladies of Fatima
shrouding the atrophied sweep
of hydrangea-high hillsides

sadness is a wall between two gardens

a finial French gold marble footstone
fringes a byzantine epitaph
peace perfect peace
bleeding hearts hemming the burial axis
contoured by††††††††† a pig iron picket grave rail

oblations of
opalite owls
carnelian cranes
fossil coral finfoots
star garnet swallows

like the ripples, like the ripples in the stream

an emerald copper centerpiece
of saint abanoub
the child martyr
atomic hands plumed in prayer
engrosses rock doves fleeing cliffrose canyons

† † † † † † † † † † ageless beauty, running wild, pins it with a star
